TIPS ON HOW TO SHARE YOUR DONATION MOMENT

A letter from the Founder of Sock Footage, Marisa Sheff

Sock Enthusiasts and Social Disrupters,

This is your chance to make a difference! Whether you post a selfie with your complimentary pair of donation socks or share a video that captures how you felt before and after your in-person giving experience, I am hoping that you will get out there and share highlights of your donation moment using #PAYITFOOTWARD.

While it is amazing for brands to give away products or donate a portion of their proceeds on your behalf, I would love to be able to elevate the same 1 to 1 giving model to the next level. I truly believe that being physically present in the donation process has the power to touch the lives of people in need while transforming your life and inspiring those around you to do the same. I am hopeful that you will reclaim the in-person donation experience. You will not regret it.

I completely understand that it can be intimidating to approach a stranger on the streets, but I have also witnessed the benefit of creating connections with those in our community. I can assure you that the reward can far outweigh the risk. We all crave human connection. Very often members of the homeless community feel invisible. By reaching out to someone in person, you can remind them of their value in this world.

Unfortunately, in this age of technology, we have lost meaningful connections. Our relationships have become short-lived and transactional. Be courageous; be fearless. Showcase vulnerability and transparency. Step outside your comfort zone and push your boundaries. I promise it will awaken a fire inside of you that you may not even know existed. Engage with people in your community who may have hit a rough patch and let them know that they are seen. Ask them their names. Introduce yourself. We are all human, and if I have learned anything in my life, it’s that everyone’s got a story. By connecting in person, you give individuals living on the streets the chance to share their stories with you. The #PAYITFOOTWARD initiative was created to remove some of the stigma associated with homelessness. By documenting highlights of your giving experience and sharing raw footage online, I believe that you can help others change their views by bringing awareness to the growing number of individuals living on the streets. #PAYITFOOTWARD is about education. Knowledge is power.

Let the online world know how it felt to approach a complete stranger to gift them with a free pair of socks. Did it make you nervous, scared, intimidated? Is this something that you had done before or were you new to the face-to-face giving process? What does giving mean to you? Share examples of instances where you craved connection and someone was there to support you. Get creative, and let us know why you think it’s important to engage in acts of kindness.

Help the homeless get back on their feet, and, most importantly, don’t forget to smile! :)
